4/07/2010 - Match report Red Lions vs Trinidad and Tobago

Match 3 Red Lions vs T&T : 7-4

1/07/2010 - Match report Red Lions vs Trinidad and Tobago

Match 1 Red Lions vs T&T: 0-3

Our first match of the summer with our National Team has ended with a disappointing 3-0 loss to Trinidad and Tobago. Whilst T&T are an improving nation we still expected a strong performance from our young group.

It will be a difficult summer for the Red Lions as we have chosen to place the priority on the U21 preparation for the European Cup. We miss 3 national Squad members (Denayer, Boon and Gougnard) and 5 National Development Squad Members. In addition to this several other key players such as John John Dohmen, Xavier Reckinger, Jerome Truyens, Jerome Dekeyser, Jeff Thys, Ben Van Hove, David Van Ryselberghe and Jeremy Celis were all unavailable for the first matches. This of course can be a seen as a real opportunity for us to develop the players in the next bracket to improve the depth of our National squad.

After the Champions Challenge in Salta where we performed creditably against very strong opponents I believed we were ready to take the next step with our players, but with only 13 available and in the heat  we found it tough against a spirited opponent. The next 2 matches will be a test of our character and I expect an improved performance and result. Whilst we have taken some steps forward in the past years it is clear that we still have some work to do with regards to a developing 25-30 fully fledged internationals. Fortunately we have this summer to allow the opportunity to many players to take these steps.

The team for the first match was:

Vincent Van Asch, Jeremy Gucassoff, John Verdussen, Eliott Van Strydonck, Max Vandersmissen, Alexandre De Saedeleer, Alexandre De Paeuw, Maxim Luycx, Thomas Briels, Renaud Pangrazio, Cédric Charlier, Greg Gucassoff, Max Peeters (U21), Harrison Peeters (U21)

Belgium Red Lions 2010 Squad - Development Squad

After a small break from training the National Program will re commence in february 2010.

It is a limited program in terms of hockey with a focus being towards physical development and the club competition leading towards the Play offs. For this reason the players will follow a strict fitness regime of 3 times per week in working in around their club commitments, whilst we will still continue with the the tuesday morning sessions and individual sessions during the week. The wednesday night session will stop for a short time for Red Lions players allowing them to focus on fitness or club work.

During the summer there will be a major focus towards the U21 European Cup and the preparation for this. All Red Lions squad members who are still U21 will focus on the U21 program and give this program priority. The remaining National squad members as well as the Development squad members will take part in test match series’ over a short but intense period between 21 June and 27 July 2010. This once again allows the club full access to National team members for the preparation for the 2010-2011 season.

Looking further than the summer a re commencement of the wednesday evenings and Stage in January 2011 are already being discussed in the planning.

Below is the new Belgium Red Lions squad. There have been some changes with renaud Pangrazio, Jeremy Gucassoff and Max Vandersmissen all being selected as part of the full sqaud for the first time. Greg Gucassoff has been moved to the Development Squad, while Philippe Goldberg has retired. Phil has been an integral part of our squad for many years and played an excellent role at his most recent tournament the European Cup in Amstelveen in 2009. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
